tuning a piano

Piano tuning is adjusting the strings of your piano in order to achieve the correct pitch. Most modern pianos are tuned to A-440 which is the international standard. For those that play the piano often it is recommended to have the piano tuned at least twice a year. If used only occasionally, a yearly tuning may be adequate.

Your piano is affected by many factors including the humidity and location of your piano in your home. Humidity, in particular, affects the wood and felt elements of your piano. If you neglect having it tuned on a regular basis the tension held in the strings can change dramatically causing it to go off pitch. Not having a regular tuning may require a pitch adjustment in addition to a fine tuning. Think of it as having to tune the piano multiple times to bring it back to the proper pitch. A pitch adjustment requires a bit more time and work.

Minor fixes can often be included in the standard tuning price. If there are significant issues with your piano action or regulation beyond the tuning price, we will ask your permission to continue at an additional cost or if you choose not to continue there will be a minimum charge of $50.

Pianos over 43” are considered a full upright. Those that stand from 40” to 43” tall are console pianos. And those under 40” are spinet pianos. Spinet pianos differ from other upright pianos as they have what is called a drop action. This makes working on a spinet more difficult. That being said, some spinets are well crafted and of good value.

Simply put, in order to fully enjoy this beautiful instrument, routine tuning, cleaning, and repair is important in order to enhance your enjoyment playing, maintaining the value of your piano, and extending the life of your piano.

Reviews That Really Resonate

"Pace Brittain did an incredible job tuning our family's Baldwin Acrosonic piano. It was quite overdue for service so I'm sure he had his work cut out for him. My son and I even had a specific request for Pace to tune the piano to A432 and he gladly fulfilled our wishes! We were not only happy with the results, but we were also pleased that the piano and the space around it were left without a trace that he had been working. Pace had a follow up conversation with us after the tuning to help us understand the piano more and some helpful details about his service provided. Having the piano in excellent hands was important to us, as this instrument was recently given to our son as a family heirloom from a beloved grandmother. We're so thankful for such a great experience with NoteWorthy Piano Tuning Services!"
